Rice & buttermilk upma

Rice & buttermilk upma is a flavourful, nourishing snack that can be put together in under 20 minutes. Rice rava (cream of rice or use Idli rava) is soaked in buttermilk and then cooked with spices to make this traditional comfort food. Additive free Sarda Farms dahi lends a refreshingly tangy taste to the upma.



  • 1 ‏cup rice rava (cream of rice)
  • ½ ‏cup Sarda Farms dahi, whisked
  • 1 ‏tablespoon Sarda Farms ghee
  • ½ ‏cup fresh green peas (or use any vegetable of choice)
  • 2-3 ‏red/green chillies, chopped
  • 1 ‏tablespoon chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 1 ‏teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ ‏teaspoon hing (asafoetida)
  • 10-12 ‏curry leaves
  • ‏Salt to taste
  • ½ ‏teaspoon sugar



Roast the rava for 1-2 minutes in a pan on low flame.

Take it out in a bowl and cool completely

Whisk dahi with about ¾ -1 cup of water.

Add this buttermilk to the rava and mix.

In a pan heat about 1- 1 ½ tablespoon ghee

Add mustard seeds and once they splutter add curry leaves, hing, chillies and chana dal.

Saute till the dal starts to turn light brown.

Add the peas and stir.

Add about 1 ½ – 2 cups of water, salt and sugar.

Bring it to a boil, lower the heat and add the rice rava.

Stir so that lumps do not form.

Cook covered on low flame till most of the water evaporates and the rava is soft. Stir in between so that the upma does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

Serve hot topped with a spoonful of Sarda Farms ghee.
