Dal Khichada

If you are looking for a spicy, simple, comforting dinner option dal khichadi fits the bill. This quick one pot meal is also a great way to use up left over rice and dal. Additive free Sarda Farms ghee lends a rich taste to this humble meal. This is a basic recipe but for a variation you can also add any vegetables of choice to it.



  • 2 cups ‏cooked rice
  • 1 cup ‏cooked toovar or moong dal
  • 2 tablespoons ‏Sarda farms ghee
  • 1 onion ‏finely chopped
  • 1 large ‏tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ‏ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon ‏cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ‏mustard seeds
  • ¾ teaspoon ‏turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon ‏red chilli powder (or as required)
  • ½ teaspoon ‏hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 teaspoon ‏garam masala
  • ‏Salt to taste


Heat 2 tablespoon ghee in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and once they crackle add cumin seeds.
Add hing, turmeric powder onion and ginger-garlic paste.
Sauté till the onions turn translucent.
Add tomato, red cilli powder and cook till the tomato softens.

Add dal, about 1 cup water and stir.
Add salt and bring it to a boil.
Add garam masala and rice and stir to mix.
Heat ghee reserved for tempering in a small pan.
Add garlic and red chillies.
Pour this tempering over the dal khichadi.
Serve hot.
