If you are looking for a spicy, simple, comforting dinner option dal khichadi fits the bill. This quick one pot meal is also a great way to use up left over rice and dal. Additive free Sarda Farms ghee lends a rich taste to this humble meal. This is a basic recipe but for a variation you can also add any vegetables of choice to it.
- 2 cups cooked rice
- 1 cup cooked toovar or moong dal
- 2 tablespoons Sarda farms ghee
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 1 large tomato, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- ¾ teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chilli powder (or as required)
- ½ teaspoon hing (asafoetida)
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
Heat 2 tablespoon ghee in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and once they crackle add cumin seeds.
Add hing, turmeric powder onion and ginger-garlic paste.
Sauté till the onions turn translucent.
Add tomato, red cilli powder and cook till the tomato softens.
Add dal, about 1 cup water and stir.
Add salt and bring it to a boil.
Add garam masala and rice and stir to mix.
Heat ghee reserved for tempering in a small pan.
Add garlic and red chillies.
Pour this tempering over the dal khichadi.
